Alpine Solar Design co-owner Jon Harrington rides to and from his business on an electric bike. He pedals on the flats and downhills, but a small battery-powered motor gives him a boost on the climbs. Harrington says it costs him about a penny's worth of electricity to make a round-trip ride to Dillon from Alpine Earth Center at the north end of Silverthorne.

 Alpine Earth Center

Alpine Earth Center has been serving Summit County since 1981. The business started as a garden center and has evolved with the community over the years. Alpine Earth Center is now home to Alpine Gardens and Alpine Solar Design. Our building serves a community gathering place with a coffee and tea shop as well as a yoga studio and massage therapist. Alpine Earth Center offers meeting space for many people showcasing a craft or doing a workshop.

When Alpine Earth Center started back in 1981 the building was much smaller with only one hoop house. In 1996 Alpine Earth Center moved into the passive solar building we are in today. This building was designed by Jon Harrington who installed solar radiant floor heating, an A-frame with an insulated north-facing pitch and a south-facing wall made up almost entirely of windows. There is also a green roof with pansies and poppies that create a In 2009 he installed a 5kW photovoltaic system. He also runs all the water features on solar photovoltaic. This creates an ambience within the building while sitting in the café and listening to the waterfall while the fish and turtle move around.

Alpine Gardens is one of the oldest and best known nursery centers in Summit County.  Owner, Sherie Sobke, is a local icon when it comes to plants. Over the years Alpine Gardens has won over 20 awards and 8 of them have been the highest of honors for their landscaping work.  Alpine Gardens has grown since the last hoop house, with now three hoop houses to hold the large variety of plant life for the high country.  Alpine Gardens keeps a stock of organic material and is moving into offering hydroponic equipment this year.
