For over 12 years the people at the newly renamed ALPINE EARTH CENTER have been active in designing and operating from a solar retail space located at 9,000 ft. altitude in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Our intent in building this experimental building was to construct a passive solar building that doubles as a retail garden center. Upon extensive research, it was concluded that the existing modular greenhouse industry relied on cheap and plentiful energy. Greenhouses with low pitched roofs were heated at night with gas fired heaters and cooled in the daytime with huge fans. Therefore, an original design was developed to create a space that doubled as a low energy use retail greenhouse and comfortable office space. The result is a passive solar heated and naturally cooled building that incorporates south glazing, large areas of ventilation, thermal mass storage, and even a green roof.
We have recently added Photovoltaic Panels to the south facing roof to lower our carbon footprint. In addition, we will be adding solar hot water panels to store more of the heat generated under the poly carbonate glazed roof. Jon returned from a solar dealer's conference in Phoenix in February with loads of information on active solar systems. He has taken and passed an extensive SOLAR ENERGY INTERNATIONAL photovoltaics installation course. Upon passing the SEI course, he passed a North American Board of Energy Practitioners exam and is now a Licensed Alternative Energy Provider in Summit County, CO.
We now have a consulting electrical engineer, structural engineer, and master electrician on our team. We are working with these solar energy experts to create a space that uses many different types of technology to turn our retail center into a living display of what is possible to eliminate our carbon footprint.
We have also attended the following sustainable building conferences in 2008 and 2009 to learn about natural building systems. We are using this knowledge to build a zero energy home here in Summit County.

We are now offering many types of products and services to further help our planet earth.
